UPDATE 28/08/17: Evelyn Hernández’s defence team will soon appeal her sentence. It is therefore important to continue putting pressure on the authorities. Please keep taking action and sharing the action with your friends.

Evelyn is 19 years old and sentenced to 30 years in prison in El Salvador. Her crime? A miscarriage.

Evelyn went to hospital after fainting, completely unaware that the rape she endured had resulted in pregnancy. After the miscarriage, hospital staff reported her to the authorities.

El Salvador has strict anti-abortion laws, which criminalises abortion in all circumstances – even when a woman’s life is in danger, in cases of severe foetal impairment or when the pregnancy is a result of rape or incest.

Aside from Evelyn, we know of 17 other women in El Salvador in recent years who have experienced pregnancy-related complications, and been accused of abortion. All have been sentenced to up to 40 years in prison.

We’ve helped women like Evelyn before. ‘Guadalupe’ received a 30 year sentence after authorities wrongly suspected she had terminated her pregnancy, but she was freed in 2015 after concerted campaigning.

Pressure right now is vital. Legislators have been postponing a debate on decriminalising abortion for months now. These delaying tactics can’t be allowed to go on.

Send an email to the Presidents of the Legislative Assembly, calling for an end to El Salvador’s total abortion ban and ensure the rights of women and girls are protected.

Thank you!

Update 08/03/18: This is now closed – thank you to the nearly 12,000 people who took action. Amnesty International will continue to rally against El Salvador’s total abortion ban and ensure the rights of women and girls are protected.

Dear Mr. President/ Estimado Sr. Presidente,

I am very alarmed that debate has been postponed on the Criminal Code reform, which would see abortion decriminalised if adopted.

Meanwhile another woman, Evelyn Beatriz Hernández Cruz,  has been sentenced to 30 years for having suffered pregnancy-related complications. Evelyn must be released immediately.

I urge you to support the proposal that ends the total ban on abortion.

Access to abortion must be guaranteed both in law and in practice. At a minimum – in cases where pregnancy poses a risk to the life or the physical or mental health of a pregnant woman or girl, in cases where the foetus will be unable to survive outside the womb, and in cases where the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest.

Yours sincerely,
