From film screenings and panel discussions, to rallies and community festivals, Amnesty activists have been busy celebrating the vast contributions of refugees to our communities in events across the country.
With this year’s theme – with courage let us all combine – echoing the resilience of people seeking asylum and the culture of solidarity we can foster when we come together, refugee week is a time for action, reflection and celebration.
Just a few highlights
In Mildura, locals came out to say welcome and share a message of hope.
The Welcome to Perth Dinner offered an opportunity for strangers to become friends over a meal and chat.
And more than a thousand people crammed into Sydney’s town hall on a rainy Sunday to call on all political parties to make humane protection policies a priority.
Inspiring events
After a roaring success in 2015, the Festival of Hope again rocked Brunswick Town Hall – market stalls, workshops, delicious food, art and lots of dancing.
In Brisbane activists celebrated with a thought-provoking flick. Meaningful movies screened ‘Evaporating borders’ – a powerful documentary exploring the lives of refugees in Greece.
