Right now, all around the world, human rights are under attack.
In 2018, Bernardo Caal Xol was thrown in jail without any evidence for protecting rivers sacred to Guatemalan Indigenous peoples.
A prisoner of conscience, Bernardo’s 12 and 14-year-old daughters have not been able to hug him for the past five years.
In 2021, people will take millions of actions to call for Bernardo’s release, and to challenge injustice in 9 other cases as part of Write for Rights.

During Write for Rights, Amnesty supporters and activists challenge injustices anywhere and everywhere they exist.
The right to protest is being met around the world with police violence, trumped-up charges and imprisonment. In Thailand, a university student peacefully calling for social reform is facing a life sentence.
In the Israeli-occupied West Bank, a young Palestinian journalist is facing death threats for calling out racism and discrimination.
“I want to know what freedom means in my homeland, what justice and peace and equality means without facing systematic racism.”

In Ukraine, women have been assaulted and abused for promoting LGBTQIA+ and women’s rights.
A journalist in China is unable to safely report on COVID-19, she’s been locked up and tortured.
There’s more we all can do to defend the rights of women, the LGBTQIA+ community, press freedom, the right to protest, and the right to a healthy environment.
Together, we can challenge injustice to make a real difference in the lives of these people and their families.
When ordinary people stand up for freedom, equality and justice, we move closer to a world where human rights are enjoyed by all.

At 15 years old, Janna Jihad is a world recognised journalist.
Since age 7 she has documented the widespread abuse, racism and discrimination of Palestinians by the Israeli military. Though she shouldn't have to.
We can help protect Palestinian children like Janna from harm. Every year, real change happens because of Write for Rights actions.
What is Write for Rights?Write for Rights and challenge injustice
When we promote and defend human rights, we can create a better world for ourselves and others.
20 years of writing for rights
Write for Rights is the world’s biggest human rights event. It’s a moment when Amnesty International’s movement of ten million comes together as one to take action and stand up for freedom, justice and equality.
Every year, on World Human Rights Day (10 October), Amnesty supporters and activists from 170 countries take action – writing letters, signing petitions, and much more – telling governments to challenge injustice and right wrongs.
Those actions pressure authorities around the world to bring those responsible for human rights abuses to justice, and free people unjustly imprisoned.
From 2,326 letters in 1991 to 4.5 million letters, tweets, petition signatures and more in 2020, Write for Rights has transformed the lives of more than 100 people over the years.
Every year, real change happens because of these Write for Rights actions.
Together, our voices are powerful enough to challenge injustice and change the world.
